ON HER FACEBOOK PAGE. WXII 12
HAD THE HONOR OF HOSTING A
LIVELY AND REALLY INSPIRATIONAL
DISCUSSION TONIGHT ON THE TOPIC
OF COLLEGE HUNGER ON THE CAMPUS
OF NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE UNIVERSITY. WE HEARD FROM A
PANEL OF EXPERTS ABOUT THE
STIGMA. ASSOCIATED WITH COLLEGE
HUNGER SOME OF THE FALSE
ASSUMPTIONS PEOPLE MAKE ABOUT IT
AND HOW DIFFICULT IT CAN BE FOR PEOPLE TO ASK FOR HELP. OUR
PANELISTS ALSO TALKED ABOUT HOW
SOME STUDENTS DISAPPEAR FROM
CLASSROOMS DUE TO VARIOUS LIFE
CHALLENGES AND THAT MOST
STUDENTS DROP OUT NOT BECAUSE SCHOOL IS TOO HARD, BUT BECAUSE
LIFE CHALLENGES CAN BE TOO HARD. THIS WAS THE FIRST NIGHT OF A
TWO-DAY MULTI-STATE EVENT KNOWN
AS THE CAROLINAS COLLEG HUNGER
SUMMIT WRAPS FROM ABO TWO
DOZEN HIGHER EDUCATION
INSTITUTIONS WILL BE GET NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE UNIVERSITY
TOMORROW FOR A KEYNOTE SPEECH
AND A SERIES OF BREAKOUT
SESSIONS. OH FOLKS. THERE IS A
FOOD PANTRY RIGHT ON THE CAMPUS
OF A NT TO HELP STUDENTS WHO ARE STRESSED AND STRUGGLING WITH
FOOD INSECURITY WE GET MORE NOW
FROM WXII 12S REAL LOVE. ACCORDING TO RESEARCH 20 TO 40
PERCENT OF COLLEGE STUDENTS FACE
HUNGER BUT RESOURCES LIKE THIS
HELP ALLEVIATE THE PROBLEM. THIS
IS THE AGGIE SOURCE FOOD. JUST
OPENED EIGHT MONTHS AGO A BRIGHT INVITING SAFE PLACE FOR STUDENTS
IN NEED OF FOOD STUDENTS LIKE
FRESHMAN WILLIAM TEASLEY. THERE’D BE SOME DAYS WHERE MY
MAIL PLANE JUST DIDN’T
SUPPLEMENT WHAT I NEEDED BUT
HE’S LINO’S OTHERS WHO LIVE OFF
CAMPUS AND HAVE TO RELY ON IT. THEY DON’T HAVE THE MEAL PLAN
THAT CAN SUPPLEMENT WHAT THEY
NEED FROM A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. I KNOW THAT MY PARENTS
DEFINITELY WENT THROUGH FOOD
INSECURITY. THEY WERE BOTH IN
THEIR BOTH GRADUATE STUDENTS. SO
THEY JUST DIDN’T HAVE THE MONEY
TO SUPPLEMENT AND SO I CAN DEFINITELY SEE THE EXACT SAME
PARALLELS AND STUDENTS THAT
THESE DAYS WHERE THEY JUST DON’T
HAVE THE MONEY TO SUPPLY WHAT
THEY NEED TEASLEY LEARNED ABOUT
THE PANTRY THROUGH HIS PROFESSOR WHO MAKES SURE STUDENTS ARE
AWARE OF WHAT’S OFFERED TO THEM
ON CAMPUS. I KNOW STUDENTS. SOMETIMES THEY’RE WORKING
MULTIPLE JOBS, RIGHT AND PUTTING
THEMSELVES THROUGH SCHOOL. AND
SO THEY NEED TO BE ABLE TO HAVE
A RESOURCE TO KIND OF COME AND
GET FOOD SO THAT THEY CAN PERFORM AT THEIR BEST IN THE
CLASSROOM IF THEY’RE NOT ABLE TO
PERFORM AT THEIR BEST THEN YOU
KNOW, HOW ARE THEY GOING TO BE
ABLE TO SUCCE TO SUCCEED ONCE
THEY LEAVE HERE WHICH LEADS TO THE PANTRIES MISSION TO
ALLEVIATE THE SHORT TERM STRESS
ASSOCIATED WITH FOOD INSECURITY
THAT MANY COLLEGE STUDENTS
EXPERIENCE GABRIEL JACKSON IS
THE COORDINATOR, BUT AGGIE SOURCE IS COMPLETELY STUDENT RUN
AND HERE’S HOW IT WORKS STUDENTS
REGISTER AND FILL OUT AN
APPLICATION. THE ONLY
REQUIREMENT BE ENROLLED IN CLASS
THAN JUST STOP BY. IT’S OPEN THREE DAYS A WEEK AND STUDENTS
CAN COME IN AT LEAST TWICE A
MONTH COOKIES CRACKERS GO FISH
EVERYTHING THAT A COLLEGE
STUDENT COULD AND SHOULD WANT
ALONG WITH CANNED. TEEN BREAKFAST FOODS WATERS COFFEE
PAPER PRODUCTS DEODORANT FACIAL
CLEANSERS BROUGHT IN THROUGH
DONATIONS AND SOME HELP FROM
SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK ALL
WITH THE BETTERMENT OF STUDENTS IN MIND AT OUR CAMPUS. WE KNOW
THAT ABOUT FIFTY NINE PERCENT OF
OUR STUDENTS RECEIVE SOME SORT
OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. AND FOR
THOSE OF US WHO HAVE BEEN IN
COLLEGE AND KNOW WHAT THAT EXPERIENCE LOOKS LIKE WITH MANY
OF OUR STUDENTS WERE NOTICING
THAT THEY’RE STARTING TO MAKE A
LOT OF TRADE-OFFS BETWEEN THEIR
AND BASIC NEEDS SO THIS TREE HAS
SERVED AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO COME AND KNOW THAT THEY
DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE. TRADE-OFFS
SO STUDENTS CAN JUST FOCUS ON
SCHOOL INSTEAD OF WHERE THEIR
NEXT MEAL MIGHT COME FROM
REPORTING IN GREENSBORO REAL OF WXII 12 NEWS. IN ADDITION TO
THAT OUR CHIEF METEOROLOGIST
LANIE POPE WAS ALSO WORKING IN
AN UNIQUE WAY TO HELP END HUNGER
IN THE TRIAD TODAY BY TAKING
PART IN THE SPORTING CLAY TOURNAMENT THAT BENEFITS SECOND
HARVEST FOOD BANK IN THE SIX
YEARS SINCE THE EVENTS BEEN HELD
ITS RAISED MORE THAN $300,000
