Van Wert Teachers Educate DeVos on Public Schools

– Our local president here, Jeff Hood, was frustrated by comments
that DeVos had made about public education. He said, I just wish I
could get her in my school. – We’re extraordinary,
but we’re ordinary because there’s a lot of public school teachers that are doing the work just like we are. – What Jeff wanted to do, was make sure that we saw the things that are real challenges.
– Right. Not just, you know, not have a photo op. But really get a real slice of the day. This is not about Kumbaya, This is about making sure that anybody who has that job understands the importance of public education, understands what a cornerstone
it is to our democracy. And that the budget cuts to it are going to be harmful for children. – It helps prevent child hunger with bags that they get to take
home over the weekend. – Betsy DeVos was able to see, just the quality programs that are in the public schools. And that we are focused, not just on test scores, But we are developing students’ character. – [Jeff] From there we
moved on to the ECC, Early Childhood Center, where
we house our pre-school. – Just the impact that
you have on a kid’s life. – I would like to think
that Secretary DeVos got to see just how important
early childhood education is. It’s the foundation for success later. We’re setting them up for
greater success down the road, instead of having to play
catch-up when they hit second, third, fourth grade. – Our robotics program
meets back in the back. They’re all in here to
learn about engineering and problem solve, and
make the best robot we can on this robotics team. The hot topic is finding
these skilled trades in science and technology,
engineering, math. We’re creating that right
here in this building. – At the end of the competition, the robot can actually put the yoga ball into the vortex. – The thing I love
about our public school, is that the community
just backs everything Van Wert does, 100%. We saw signs from around the city, that were, “good luck robotics team.” – And we were part
of a 5th grade lesson, that highlights project based learning. – Okay, Aaliyah, go first. I’m extremely proud of Van
Wert Public School System. I mean, I grew up here, I went
to school here, I came back. I hope that Secretary DeVos
takes away the fact that we really work hard at Van Wert to do as many innovative things as we can. To include as many students as we can. – Wow – [Jeff] Then we had another
round table discussion on special education. – And so when I have
behavior issues that come up, we’re not seeing it as
something we have to squelch. We have to say, what’s
underneath that behavior? What’s driving that? – And we couldn’t be prouder of the fact that we’ve broken new ground, with the AFT and the
Secretary of Education, doing a joint event and
having some real dialogue. – I just wanna say, thank you for coming. – Yes. Thank you. – What I take away from the day, and what I hope she will
take away from the day, is the enduring nature and
value of public education. This is a community that
loves its public schools. They show that public schools ought to be a bipartisan issue. That they love their public schools regardless of politics.
