University of Birmingham Hong Kong Scholarship
I’m Cherry and I’m studying for the BA Education in the University of Birmingham. I’m from Hong Kong and have been awarded the University of Birmingham Hong Kong Outstanding Scholarship. Birmingham is a renowned university with passionate lecturers and tutors. I enjoy the course very much because the content is very diverse. We get to learn how to teach and then some history about the education in England and some equality issues as well, so we actually get to know the whole picture of the education in the UK and around the world, so it’s a globalised programme. We get a lot of support from our tutors and lecturers. Whenever we’ve got problems and challenges they are always there to help and they’re very supportive, especially to international students like us because they know we might get a lot of problems. For example, understanding some difficult readings or writing assignments, so they really help us a lot. I think learning in a different country is a totally new experience to me because in Hong Kong we usually learn in a traditional way, teachers talk a lot and in that sense we just read text books and like memorise facts but when learning in the UK it’s different because most of the time you have to learn by yourself, like you have to read a lot of books and extra articles to understand the whole topic and not just rely on the lecturers because learning is about yourself. I think the city centre is where I hang out with my friends and there’s a China Town where you can get a lot of supplies for yourself like the cooking ingredients and other stuff. I think people in Birmingham and in the UK are really friendly and they’re really here to help you a lot. I applied for Birmingham through an agency in Hong Kong and they offered me the chance to apply for this scholarship and they kind of sorted out some eligible applicants and we had to go through an interview like a short one of 15-20 minute interview before we were awarded the scholarship.
