Tuition-Free College

Tuition-Free College

In order to fulfill my dream of becoming a
teacher, I had to take out student loans. Eleven years later, I’m still paying them
off. In the United States, our students bear the
burden of $1.48 trillion in student loan debt which is exactly the amount of new debt the
Republican Congress decided to create with tax cuts for corporations and the 1%. In California, there’s the $48 Fix; a proposed
gradual tax where most households will only pay $48 per year into a general education
fund, thereby ensuring that every Californian who dreams of higher education can get it
for free. In our current system, students have to choose
a career based on their wallet, not on their dreams. We owe our children better than this. If we can add $1.5 trillion dollars to the
deficit through tax cuts, we can certainly afford to find ways to better educate our
citizenry.
