Like a lot of us in higher education I have a background in my specialty, but I have NO background in teaching or education, and I sort of knew I was missing something and I felt like it was
a disservice to my students So when I saw the ad for the Higher Ed Program, I thought: Fantastic! Here’s a way for me to get some actual background on how people learn and how to be more effective as a teacher. Now that I understand how people learn, I understand what barriers could prevent my students from learning I have changed it up. I don’t just use straight PowerPoint any longer. I use small group discussions, small group breakouts, trivia games all to reinforce the actual material that I’m teaching and I think it’s really helped in
the students’ long-term retention. I say this in all honesty: I think I owe winning the “Professor of the Year” (Award),
this year, a lot, to the Teaching in Higher Ed Program. Because without the opportunity, I don’t think I would have had the same skill set to bring into the classroom this year. I don’t think I would have
made as much of an impact. So, our Teaching in Higher Education
Certificate Program was featured in Inside Higher Ed. And when that article came out, we got calls from all over the country-
North Carolina, Michigan- People who were interested,
because it is truly a unique program. The people who earn this certificate- They leave with practical strategies, things that they can use to make their classrooms more engaged and active and exciting. Every year I teach a course, On top of my regular duties
here at the Teaching and Learning Center, And I went back to teaching Italian after having done the Teaching
in Higher Education Certificate courses for the first time last semester And I really changed what I did in the classroom. I thought I was a really great teacher,
By the way- and I think I WAS
a very good teacher in many ways, but I could be better. And what I found was, I made changes in the classroom and to my syllabus that REALLY helped my students. And the evaluations show it. Students feel like they had a really great experience and that they learned a lot and were able to really progress
in their learning. And I really feel that, the Teaching in Higher Education Certificate
course helped me, as well as helping the people that we teach. It was great collaborating with
people from many different fields like dance, history, engineering- The program was a true networking opportunity Temple’s Certificate Program was
the BEST personal investment I’ve ever made It’s also a professional credential People who are looking to get tenure, promotion, to get their contracts renewed, or even to get hired in the first place- can demonstrate with this Certificate that they know a lot about how people learn and the best practices for teaching.
