Scholarships Offered Through the Office of Undergraduate Research

The Office of Undergraduate Research has three
different awards that students can apply to: the Undergraduate Research Fellowship, the
travel award and the student researcher award. So the student researcher award allowed me
to travel to Uganda this summer for two months where I conducted research on the beauty pageant
industry there. Using this award helped me talk to other scholars
in the field to really determine what I need to be honing in on in my research. The funding really helped me attend the conference
and it helped enrich my research experience because I’ve only presented in front of a
large audience once. Being able to use these funds to go to an
academic conference and talk with scholars who have been in the same position that I
have, who have done amazing work in this field, or who just really know the next steps to get ahead
really transformed the way I looked at my research. My biggest advice would be to apply. The worst that they can say is no. Ask for advice from your research mentor,
see what he says. Start early. A lot of these awards have really close application
dates to the start of the semester. Its exciting when you put all this work into
this application and you get the award and then you get to go and do these wonderful
things. So yeah, its really benefitted my life immeasurably.
