Initially going into the research project,
I was rather nervous, not knowing what was going to be involved and how much work it
was going to be. The skills that we needed were taught to us
through the course and as we went through and started to do the research, I started
to get more comfortable. The students indicating the benefit of these
videos and asking for more really made it feel that the research was worthwhile. I had a very positive experience doing this
research project. The support that I got when I had questions
– there were people here at the college that could help me. If I had a research-related question, there
were colleagues in place that I could ask for advice or direction. I was very excited about being able to research
the teaching of literature. Students will often say that literature has
no relevance in their lives today. So, the fact that our students don’t see it
as relevant told me that we have a problem in our teaching practice and I was really
grateful to have the opportunity to explore that with my students because it did turn
out to be that they had needs that we were not meeting. I haven’t done any research before. I was a little nervous, but during it, the
observations I took were very positive and the students enjoyed it and it showed through
in their grades and their learning experiences. I worked at the Scarborough General Hospital
as a nurse practitioner for pain management. Students that came in did not do a comprehensive
pain assessment and management, so when I came to Centennial College, I wanted to see
how our education system will actually help them to be able to manage pain and assess
it appropriately. So after the research project, Angela and
myself were able to actually develop the other research proposal and we’re going to implement
our second research project, still within pain management, but with an interprofessional
perspective. I have shared my research with various faculty
within my department and I’ve shared it with some of my students as well who were participants
in my research. Once it’s refined, my intent is to share it with
the educational community, and hopefully have that research published. I have shared this research with my fellow
colleagues here at the college. A lot of my colleagues have given me very
positive feedback about it and they are looking into ways that they can incorporate an unstructured
lab sheet in their own personal labs with their students. I have shared my research at the Congress
of the Humanities and Social Sciences, so I was able to bring this project to the larger
academic community and share that with my peers.
