The Honor Roll highlights the
role colleges and… universities play in solving
community problems. The President and the
Corporation for National… and Community Service recognize
institutions that… achieve meaningful, measurable
outcomes in the communities they serve. We are proud to announce this
year’s winners. At California State University
Dominguez Hills… students volunteered 180,000
hours last year… to improve the health,
education, and environment… of the surrounding community. Students begin serving in the
community as freshmen… engaging in service learning
through their coursework… and the university’s central
service hub. Dominguez Hills students mentor
young children through… Jumpstart, an AmeriCorps funded
preschool program. Students also support the
school’s multifaceted… sustainability initiative,
conducting research on… water-wise lawns and partnering
with the city of Carson… to create a bike path system. And Nursing, Psychology, and
Sociology students have… provided free medical care to
over 2,000 homeless… individuals in a single month. In all, 65 percent of Dominguez
Hills students engage… in service learning. Looking ahead, the university
seeks new ways to… measure the impact of student
service hours… on the greater community. From the moment they step on
campus… Loras College students are
immersed in service projects… in the Dubuque community. Through coursework and the
school’s Interfaith Community… Service Program, students
volunteered… nearly 82,000 hours last year. Many of these service hours
supported… organizations like Children of
Abraham, which engages in… regular ‘faith conversations’
and projects to build… solidarity between people of
different religious backgrounds. Students also served people
with disabilities through the ‘DuBuddies’ program,
striving to empower them… to build networks within their
community. On Make a Difference Day, Loras
College students helped to… weatherize more than 60 homes in
the area. And during the Duhawk Dance
marathon… students annually raise funds
for the Children’s Miracle… Network, totaling nearly
$800,000 over eight years. In total 72 percent of Loras
College students volunteer. The college is committed to
leveraging work study and… AmeriCorps to continue expanding
its community outreach… and shaping students into
responsible… contributors to society. Service is a defining element of
academics at… the University of Nebraska
Omaha. Since 1997, academic
service-learning has… grown from seven courses to more
than 160… which today includes over 2,600
students. Campus-wide, students gave
380,000 hours… to service projects last year. Projects include relieving food
insecurity… in the local Omaha area,
conducting food drives… aquaponics research, and service
in food pantries. UNO also offers students
alternative fall and… spring break options, rebuilding
homes… and preventing homelessness. And, to help prepare inmates for
rentry, students serve… the Douglas County Department of
Corrections by teaching… essential computer skills to
inmates. Today, 42 percent of the student
body participates in… service learning projects, and
with the opening of the… Barbara Weitz Community
Engagement Center in… Spring 2014, UNO will continue
its tradition of meaningful… and reciprocal community
engagement. Inspired by its mission to
improve the lives of… children and families, Wheelock
College uses the time… and talent of its students and
faculty to serve those in the… Boston area and around the
globe. With 280 community partnerships
in Boston-area schools… agencies, and hospitals and
extensive options to study… and serve abroad, Wheelock
students performed… 220,000 hours of community
service last year. One example of success is the
Wheelock Jumpstart site… funded by AmeriCorps. The preschool program has the
highest percentage of… student participation of any
Boston-area college… or university and is recognized
as a national model… for effective literacy programs. And through the college’s
Presidential International… Service Learning Program,
students provided nearly… 15,000 service hours during
trips to Africa, Ireland… Belize, Haiti, Germany, and
Barbados. Today, 85% of Wheelock students
participate in… community service activities. In the future, Wheelock hopes to
continue forging new… partnerships and opportunities
for community collaboration… to better serve individuals and
families in Boston… and around the world. Learn more about the President’s
