Paying it Forward: The Impact of a Scholarship

Giving back is mentoring students. Guiding students and giving them a break in
life. I’m here actually for a video shoot, meeting
this young student. How are you? Good. Who has been elected to receive mine and my
wife’s scholarship. So I got admitted to UCLA PhD! She doesn’t know about it, we will disclose
that to her this afternoon. My name is Hannaneh Hojaiji, I am a senior
Electrical Engineering student from Iran. When I was a kid I was curious about what
I can do, what I can build, but I might have not had the chances to do some of the things
I wanted to do. But being here I am a woman, I am an engineer,
and if I have that opportunity at UCLA to use my engineering knowledge into the medical
field and to have people be healthy in their life, that the dream for me to come true. UCLA was love at first sight. But, as a foreign student there was not much
available to me. But I did get a grant in aid and that made
a very deep impression on me – that somebody who didn’t know me was willing to stand as
a guarantor for me. That day I knew that if I ever became successful,
one of the things I will do is help others as I can. I’m going to take this envelope, and go to
Hannaneh, and I’m going to tell her you know my wife and I have set up a scholarship. Now what if I told you, that that student
is Hannaneh. Congratulations. Oh my god! And I open up the envelope, oh my god! That can’t be true. Oh come on, you’re kidding me. No way. Dear Hannaneh, I am pleased to award you… Sometimes, I see myself sitting over there,
in front of me. Nervous. Anxious. A bit of fear. And a lot of hope. You feel like am I doing the right thing?Maybe
I’m on the right path, and when someone gives you that assurance, all of a sudden my words
are pretty much like oh my god, know I’m just feeling. Yeah. I get a lot out of it. But, above all, you are supporting students,
who are our future. And you do not know in what way they will
effect human destiny.
