[Sara Richardson] Today is the
national day, across the country that the National Merit semifinalist
are recognized publicly by all the schools across the nation, and we’re
very excited to surprise – we actually had five national merits –
and we were only able to surprise in person three, but we’re very
proud of our five National Merit semifinalists. Mr. Mocks ace time we
have a National Merit semifinalist in here, and we’re here to
congratulate James Tran! (cheering) [James Tran] I was part of the group
that came to surprise everybody. So I’m part of the drumline to come in
and we play, and – and, and then we announced who win – who, who got a
National Merit. And I didn’t know that I won- so I kind of like sang
happy birthday to myself basically. It’s a good time. [Sara Richardson]
Their score on the PSAT is what qualifies them, and it changes
certain points every year. [James Tran] I had hopes that I’d- that
I’d- this would happen, but like when- when I got called on to help
surprise people I didn’t think I got it. so this is a pretty big
surprise. Trying to major in computer science. [Sara Richardson]
We’re here to recognize the National Merit semifinalist in this ace time-
Mr. Miles O’Neal! Congratulations – put your stuff away-
congratulations- [teacher] Congratulations, Miles! [Sara
Richardson] We are super proud of you, Stand up – stand up. Super
proud of you. High five, and that we did all this just for you. [Miles
O’Neal] Well, I’m not entirely sure where I want to go, but I’ve always
loved economics and mathematics, and so I’m probably gonna start there.
But I don’t know, we’ll have to see in college where I go. [Sara
Richardson] I’m so proud of my kids, they’re awesome. Thank you Miss
Schraders class, we’re here to recognize the National Merit
semifinalist. (cheering) We’re here to recognize Miss Madeline Coleman.
[Madeleine Coleman] I want to double major in anthropology and theater,
so I want to be a comedy writer- and I also love the Arthurian legends.
[Sara Richarson] I’ve only been here 12 years, we’ve been doing it 12
years- so I said we’ve been doing it since we had National Merit
semifinalists here at East High. We’re very proud of our kids, we’re
very proud of our programs. And this is a tradition that we do every
year; we go around, we surprise our kids. We added our drumline today-
that was very exciting as a new tradition part of this. Recognize
the – the great accomplishments that they do every day in class. [James
tran] Definitely looking for scholarships related to National
Merit.
