Lydia Ross: Equity, access and inclusion in higher education

My focus is on higher education and within that I study equity access and inclusion issues. One area that I’m really interested in is looking at the transition from high school to college for students and how students are accessing higher education and in particular the role that admissions policies play in their access So looking at affirmative action or studying the effects of race-conscious first race-neutral admissions policies and seeing the influence that that has on students applications but then also who’s admitted and who ultimately enrolls and then beyond that I’m also interested in looking at inclusion issues within higher education, so do students feel welcomed on campus. Do they feel included in the classroom? And what’s the role that pedagogy and faculty have on students feeling welcomed or not? I ultimately would like to find a job where I get to keep doing research and looking at other issues that impact student enrollment in higher education and looking at programming to make students feel more welcomed and included so either as a faculty member Which would be I think a great career or as someone working in like a research center and that was part of the reason why I chose this program actually because I thought it gave me really broad and diverse options for career and employment opportunities after graduating You
