Impact of scholarships

I feel honored to be part of this campus and especially my major molecular cellular and developmental
biology I honestly don’t think I could complete my
education without scholarships I can really focus on my
studies now so it’s really made an incredible
difference in my life I feel like I have all these possibilities it’s so open to me now I really
enjoy it here I wanna be in the audience in the
scholarship dinners I wanna be the one giving back because there could be someone
like me a few years from now and I wanna be sure to invest in their
education like people are investing in mine now my father was a government official in Yemen he had to
leave the country for political reasons just being in a political family encouraged
me too look and explore what I can do in politics the scholarship helped to open more
doors for me in terms of my educational goals one thing
that I learned from getting scholarships is to actually not only give back to the community but
also think about the people who actually donated and appreciate the fact that
there are people who care about the students and the future of
this country I wanted to be a world-famous Chicano poet that was my intention when I came here
and I took this class and learned about the Big Bang and
earthquakes and tidal waves and all this really
cool stuff it wasn’t easy to change my major and if
I hadn’t had scholarship money I wouldn’t have been able to do it I really wanted to be able to use my work to advance the whole field of
alternative energies I had come through this academic pipeline and came full circle to my community and
had something that they really needed that I could offer them and so the impact was that I was able to pursue
my dreams a lot of people see the scholarship as a charity exercise and I actually see
it as a Recruitment tool for us to actually bring these very
talented students to work with us and to be part of our physics program and then send them into PhD programs I grew up originally in Mexico I came to the
United States on a summer scholarship and radically changed my life gave me
opportunities that I would otherwise have and not only I feel
morally obliged to do the same but I actually think that this is a very important central part of society
to you know give these opportunities to students my interest is medi-cal device and I really like their research
that they’re doing in bionic lab scholarships help me I mean it gave
me the peace of mind to focus on what I was doing and study want to do something positive for my community I got the support from the community I
wanna give it back and I if I have that support I can continue my education my passion I see a world that is troubled and people without right and I want to study to try and find the space where change can happen. I am a reentry student I have a second chance and I’m going to make the most of it getting these scholarships has empowered me to pursue my dream of
graduating from UCSC with a Bachelor’s Degree and going on to graduate studies there always option in every situation look for them and maximize them
