Higher Education: Inspiring Students

Higher Education: Inspiring Students

Our vision is to design places and
experiences that inspire people and I love how that connects to our higher
education market because so much what of we do is about inspiring students, inspiring faculty and staff in that campus environment not just in the classroom or
the laboratory, but the student life facilities and spaces is in between, the outdoor spaces but we need to inspire students about the future one of the cool things about being a higher ed architect is that we’re so connected to education so we value it not only in the design of our spaces but also how we influence and learn how to design those spaces. So we’re constantly learning. We do that by spending time on campus and just watching the student experiences.
Eating lunch in student centers and just observing what’s going on when I’m on campus I’m always looking for the energy I’m always looking for the key moments
of those passing by moments of students where are the students going? how are
they moving? is it working well? is it not working well? or looking at the
buildings themselves. you know, how are they interacting with the students? the first question we’re going to ask them is
“why are we doing this building?” why is this building coming into existence? why is it important for you? why is it important
for your students? so when we ask “why?” say half a dozen times, then we start to unearth what their challenges are. what their goals are. what their dreams are.
and we start to think about those, and we start to understand the problem before
we really diagnose and give them a proposed solution . combined with the
understanding of human behavior and culture and knowing that we can
impact that through the design of space the design process is a fluid motion
that allows us to engage the client early, ask the right questions and create
the the best solution for them we need to understand them. we want to understand
our clients because that’s how we get the strategic results that we’re always
trying to achieve. we have laboratory planners on our staff, which means
they’re integrated from day one and they’re always there to impact our clients projects. we have a team of experts dedicated to experiential
graphic design. again being integrated day one and achieving the clients vision
and even things like on the technology side. you know, AVUITY, from a
data-driven design solution of how we can actually measure facilities and
spaces and compare that to results and allow that to inform our design process we go back, we interview students, we do
post-occupancy surveys, and pre-design surveys to understand the totality of the problem and how the problem was resolved, so that we constantly have a feedback loop to inform the next project if you want a building that meets your
unique needs that really will enable your students to become better,
productive citizens, professionals… hire us. because we’re gonna listen to you
we’re gonna meet your unique needs and we’re gonna tailor a building that’s all
about you. so it’s not about BHDP, we’re very very humble in how we practice our profession but we’re very much about the client, in celebrating
their success
