. REPORTER: JULY 1 IS DEADLINE DAY WHEN THE STATE CONSTITUTION SAYS LAWMAKERS HAVE TO HAVE A BUDGET READY AND IN PLACE. WITH LAWMAKERS NOWHERE NEAR COPPER HIGHS COME WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY ARE NOT READY? >>THESE PEOPLE NEED TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND DO WHAT THEY WERE MEANT TO DO. REPORTER: IT HAS BEEN TWO MONTHS SINCE LEGISLATORS LEFT THE ROUND HOUSE WITHOUT A DEAL. COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES HAVE NO BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR. THIS YEAR’S MONEY RUNS OUT JULY 1.>>YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE KIDS. THEY ARE THE ONES THAT WILL SUFFER. REPORTER IN ONE WEEK LAWMAKERS WILL TAKE ANOTHER CRACK AT BALANCING THE STATE BUDGET. IF THEY CAN’T — >>HIGHER EDUCATION WOULD COME TO A HALT BECAUSE THERE WOULD BE NO MONEY TO FUND AFTER JULY 1. REPORTER THE BUDGET WOULD ALSO HIT LAWMAKERS THEMSELVES. ON JULY 1, THEIR CASH RUNS AT TWO.>>STATE GOVERNMENT WILL RUN OUT OF MONEY. REPORTER: THE ENTIRE BUDGET IS UP IN THE AIR. LAWMAKERS NEED TO FIND A WAY TO PAY FOR THE LEGISLATURE. THAT MEANS CUTS TO OTHER PROGRAMS, TAX HIKES, OR MAJOR TAX REFORMS ARE NECESSARY TO MAKE A BUDGET WORK.
