GO IVC – 2019 Scholarship Awards Ceremony

GO IVC – 2019 Scholarship Awards Ceremony

[♪♪♪♪] [applause] Today is our annual
scholarship ceremony, where a lot of students who
have been working so hard, and they finally get their hard work
paid off, and they’ll be recognized at the scholarship ceremony
by the amazing donors. [Glenn] Today, we’ve given out
over $500,000 to our students; about 570 different scholarships. We have a foundation to
provide support for students and programs where the funding
is not coming from the state. [Kathleen] It is fantastic that we are
able to provide this level of support to help them achieve
their goals in education. When I’m experiencing
struggles with my dyslexia and when I feel
like I can’t do it, the scholarship will remind me that
I can do it; that other people believe in me to achieve whatever I dream of. The non-academic barriers
are a serious impediment to our students’ academic success.
So these dollars that are raised by these amazing donors
have helped these students become absolute scholars;
transfer to most of the major universities
around the country. I’ll be transferring to UCI
for a biological sciences major in hope of going to medical school
because I want to be a doctor. [Elissa] There are actually two main
reasons we have this ceremony. One is of course to thank our
donors because their generosity is overwhelming and this is one
public way to acknowledge them. It’s also a good time to teach the
students that giving is a good thing. I am truly in awe of
the donors who are here. Every one of them invested
in us and in our futures. While receiving a scholarship
can make anyone feel special, I can only imagine
how it feels to give one. I hope that one day I am able
to have the experience of awarding a scholarship to another
promising IVC student.
