Educate Or Dictate Your Employees | Straight Talk with Lou Mosca

(music) Hi, Lou Mosca, Chief Operating Officer of
American Management Services. The Topic today is: Educate versus Dictate. I’ve met a lot of owners, myself included
sometimes, that not have been that great at educating our staff on topics, and are more dictatorships or it’s
more “my way or the highway” and “just do what I want you to do when I want you to do
it,” and everything else will take care of itself. I think one of the things that have changed
dramatically over the last ten years, in particular, is people can get educated on how to do anything
they want through the internet. An owner is not spending the time, the energy,
or the money educating his or her staff is making a big mistake. The days of just ruling like a dictator are
so passe, so over it, it’s kind of ridiculous. But I still see owners that way. I have a client right now that I’ve known
for almost 20 years, and he’s very draconian in his thoughts and how he wants things done,
and he’s just not willing to be flexible or change or grow with the times a little bit. I struggle with that myself plenty of times. Educate versus dictate. I think that you can dictate. You can dictate policy. You can dictate direction. You can dictate tone. To some degree, you can dictate culture. You can’t always dictate results, contrary
to what people think. The only way to make sure that your edicts,
your “dictates,” are implemented and bear fruit is to educate. Not spending the time, the energy, the effort
educating your staff is a huge mistake, and you should look at what you have in place
— not just a job description and not just a non-compete or a non-disclosure agreement
with your staff, and not just a pay plan, or a commission plan, or a pay-for-performance
plan, but an education program that is consistent, that’s transparent, that helps develop key
people into really strong people and really strong performers, and give people an opportunity
to grow. Educate versus dictate. That’s my thoughts. If I can help talk to anybody about it, please
feel free, give me a call. (800) 743-0410. Have a great day, folks.
