Driven to Opportunity

Driven to Opportunity

El Salvador
changed my life. In ways I was so ready for,
but wasn’t expecting. [MUSIC PLAYING] I had mentioned to
Professor Emrey, like, hey, there’s this
really cool opportunity, but I just don’t know
that I have the money to do this right now. And she came back and she said,
hey, what about a scholarship? What if Whitewater is willing
to help you go do this? So yeah, Whitewater helped
me go to El Salvador and observe the presidential
elections down there. It was a team of 13
or 14 North Americans, and that’s when I met Kayla. And Kayla was by far the
youngest person in the group. And, just very intent
about the whole process. I spent that day at the polls
all day watching them set up, and then watching them
vote for hours and hours. And then I sat and watched
them count the votes because they count
all the ballots by hand. So we were there to make sure
that, like any disputed votes went to the correct party. And then that got turned
in to the government. Often, what they find
here is something that really kindles their
interest or their emotions. I’m going to get to
go back down and take part in this, really, monumental, historical,
moment for El Salvador. Oh, my gosh. I didn’t think in
my wildest dreams that I would be in El Salvador. But I also wouldn’t have,
had that opportunity had I not, sat in these seats, so. It opened doors that aren’t
otherwise going to get opened. I think we, work the hardest, to give our students opportunities. She’s very driven. We’re going to hear big things
from Kayla, for sure. [MUSIC PLAYING]
