Conway Scholars: A Way to Open Doors to Your Career

Conway Scholars: A Way to Open Doors to Your Career

When I got accepted to the school I had no idea I had the scholarship so I still had in the back of my mind, “Well, how am I going to pay for school? Do I still need to work these two jobs? Is it possible to
go to school and work two jobs? Nursing students have to pay for tuition the fees and the associated expenses, including books. In order for us to be
able to prepare nurses, we have to be able to get them educated. This financial
assistance program tremendously helps take away that burden. Well, as a Conway Scholar, everything is covered. My tuition, books, all the fees, so we didn’t have
anything to worry about with tuition. It was all covered by that scholarship so
all I had to concentrate on was really just the education. Beyond the obvious financial aspect, the Conway scholarship has introduced me to a mentor who has
stayed with me since I started this program. Every tool that she had was at
my disposal to make me the most successful person that I could be. And
without a doubt, I would say that’s almost comparable to the financial aspect. We have a tremendous number of faculty who volunteer each and every term to be a mentor. These opportunities are again ways that we can support the student
through their academic journey, through their professional journey, and hopefully
expanding their knowledge of what nurses can do. When I was applying for all the
nursing schools I saw that there was a scholarship available at University of
Maryland. They sent me a letter that I had received that scholarship and would
be a Conway Scholar. So that’s how I knew that this really was the right place for
me to be. Students when they apply for the Conway
Scholarhip have to write an essay and these essays are extremely poignant. They’re
touching, they are personal, and they really get to the core of what this
educational opportunity will do for them as the person. The Conway Scholarship has
helped me to focus more on nursing, become a little bit more closer to the
faculty here at Shady Grove at University of Maryland. It has opened
doors as to me being more available for clinical hours, being able to have my
weekends available to devote time to studying, and just to focus and prepare
for this rigorous nursing program.
