Chevening Scholars – Ira Paulo Pozon from the Philippines

[Music] I’m Ira Paulo Pozon. I’m a lawyer from
the Philippines and I’m studying the LLM in International Commercial Law. The Chevening Scholarship is the premiere
educational scholarship provided for by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It’s open
to all Masters degrees, at any university in the UK, and it just provides for everything
a student will need, from full tuition to airfare, all the accommodation needs, food
allowance, et cetera. The Chevening Scholarships are prestigious
by nature. It’s a really good scholarship. You get to study in the UK and apply what
you’ve learned for the development or the uplifting of our own economies and our own
countries. I work as legal counsel to the Vice-President
of the Republic of the Philippines. And using what I’ve learned here, bringing it back
to the Philippines, in a legal capacity, I’m sure it will be beneficial not just to him
but to the Filipino people in general. You get a perspective from students, from
peers, from all over the world. Without Chevening in Nottingham I wouldn’t have met friends
from, let’s say, Greece, Cyprus, parts of Africa, Tanzania, Cameroon… everybody thinks
in a different way, and you learn from that. With so many international students it just
speaks well of Nottingham as a university itself. That people come here, and travel
here, because they know it’s such a good school. The overall reputation of the University is
ranked really high. The quality of education, the module convenors, are high calibre and
top class. The campus is just gorgeous, the city is gorgeous, the castle… it’s everything
I expected it to be and more. It’s just a nice country, you see so many things. Big
fields, castles, gigantic halls, beautiful universities, beautiful lakes and parks, friendly people… everybody is just willing to help you out. The International Office is very helpful.
They helped us a lot during International Week. We started a week before the locals
came in, and we were living in a hall, and they just spend the entire week telling us
about the University, helping us understand what life is like here. If you needed anything,
they would help you out. I was appointed Chevening Regional Ambassador
for the Midlands region, which pretty much is being the representative of fellow Chevening
Scholars in the area. And, as ambassador, you’re supposed to be able to liaise with
them, help them out with whatever they need, and set up events for them to network. I’m just completely thankful to Chevening
and Nottingham for bringing me here. I’ve learnt so much in such a short time. Everything is just so prestigious. Nottingham
University is very prestigious. The Chevening Scholarships are very prestigious. It just
fits perfectly. It’s an all-in package for you to study here and it’s just a great
way to visit the UK, to see its beauty, and to study at exceptional institutions like
this.
