CAS Emergency Scholarship Fund

I’m Dr. Rhonda Dean Kyncl, and I’m the Associate Dean for Students in the College of Arts and Sciences. Some years ago we set up a discretionary scholarship fund designed to assist students when they had emergency needs. The scholarship fund is a way for us to provide those micro-scholarships that helps students complete their degrees and get their diplomas from the University of Oklahoma. Hi, my name is Mareyba Fawad, and I am a junior at OU, and I’m majoring in Psychology and minoring in History of Science. So the Emergency Scholarship Fund really helped me and my family out. It’s one of the big reasons I’m still at OU. I remember this past semester when I was trying to enroll for classes, it said I had a hold on my account. The University policy changed so that the prior term balance had to be paid in full before I could enroll into the next term, and my family couldn’t do that The scholarship fund was my only way out at the end of the day and it’s the reason I was able to enroll. Hi, my name is Alexandria Martinez, and I’m a Social Work major, and I’ll be graduating this May, So, the reason I got this scholarship was because this summer I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I got really sick in the summer and I was in the hospital for about two weeks, and the hospital bill was about $30,000. Even though my parents do have insurance it was still $30,000, and they couldn’t help me with OU. And so I was in a little bit of a bind, and I really didn’t want my disease to stop me from continuing my education, especially because I’m a senior. So, there is probably no way I’d still be here if it wasn’t for this scholarship. I know I’m not the only that gets emotional about OU I worked super hard to get here. You know, life happens, and because of you guys, I get to say I am graduating from the University of Oklahoma in May. And so I would urge donors to please donate to this fund because it’s one of the biggest things that would really help any student like me.
