Access to Higher Education: Tom’s Story

My name is Tom Simpson, I did the Access to Higher Education Diploma and my subjects were English Literature, Creative Writing and Psychology. When I left school I didn’t have the grades I needed to go onto Higher Education and going onto the Access course gave me the opportunity to get those grades. I wanted to go back to education because I wasn’t 100% satisfied in my job; it was ok, but I didn’t think that long term I’d be satisfied in that position with that particular company so I wanted to go back to get access to Higher Education to see what University could offer me. Studying on the Access course was really good fun. I got to meet a lot of new people; it was really diverse and I met all sorts of people, different age groups. Not only that, I found that because it’s three evenings a week it’s really helpful for me, it was really easy to fit it in and fit the assignments in around my life and other commitments. If someone was thinking about doing the Access course, I’d say definitively give it at try, at least for the induction period. You might find like I did that after that you’re hooked and you want to come back and keep going and start getting into the proper assignments. It’s definitely very eye-opening
