A Palestinian refugee’s childhood experience of schooling in Jerash Camp, Jordan
This of course is my school, it is the ____ school. I studied here for 10 years, from the first grade to the tenth grade. There were Palestinians with me here and this is the school where we used to sing songs about Palestine. And they used to remind us about Palestine and everything was about Palestine, and the teachers would teach me about Palestine and all the students with me were Palestinian, and everything around me, all the environment around me was Palestinian. I didn’t know the Jordanian people and I didn’t know what they used to think about us. I used to think that it’s only us Palestinians and this is our community here. It wasn’t as if we were in Jordan or that we were living in another country that was not our country And they used to feel that we are Palestinian and we belong to this place which is the camp. But I didn’t know that we were living in Jordan.
